Bora Bora was
originally named Pora Pora. The first European settlers on the Island misheard
it as "Bora Bora" and it stuck!
One of the French Polynesia Leeward groups of Islands is the Island of Bora Bora. The Island features an extinct volcano at its centre which rises to two peaks called Mount Pahia and Mount Otemanu.
Bora Bora is nestled on the waters about 230 kilometres (143 miles) northwest of Papeete. It is surrounded by a lagoon and a barrier reef.
Think of the vast Pacific Ocean. Look way out to the middle of this water mass and put your finger on the globe about half way between Australia and Peru. Move it to just below the equator, and you will locate French Polynesia. Five great islands are scattered across this remote territory of the South Pacific.
Bora Bora is a small island thick with coconut forests and colorful villages and surrounded by miles of fine, white sandy beaches and crystal clear, turquoise water as far as the eye can see.
